1 Kings 18
The Cloud the Size of a Man’s Hand

On Thursday night, October 15, 2026, at New Prospect Methodist Campground in Vancleave, Mississippi, Rev. Jeff Switzer (pastor of Trinity Methodist Church in Gulfport, MS) continued the Campmeeting series on the life of the prophet Elijah. Drawing from 1 Kings 18, he focused on what happened after the dramatic fire fell on Mount Carmel—the prayer for rain that ended a three-year drought.

After the people declared, “The Lord, He is God,” Elijah climbed higher on the mountain, bowed low with his face between his knees, and prayed with humility and persistence. Seven times he sent his servant to look toward the sea. On the seventh look, a tiny cloud the size of a man’s hand appeared. Soon the sky grew black and a torrential rain fell.

Key themes from the message:

  • Humility precedes breakthrough. Elijah’s posture of prayer was not performance but a heart bowed low before God (see 1 Peter 5:6).
  • Persistence in prayer. The fire came quickly; the rain required patience. Prayer is often slow, hidden, and repetitive. George Mueller’s decades-long prayers for five men illustrate that persistent prayer is never wasted—it can outlive the one who prays.
  • Small beginnings are God’s specialty. A cloud the size of a man’s hand became a downpour. Jesus multiplies what we actually have (five loaves and two fish), grows the mustard seed into a tree, and launched the kingdom from a feeding trough, a cross, and 120 praying believers. Small faith placed in His hands becomes the rain of provision and the harvest of souls.
  • Faith hears the promise before it sees the answer. Elijah announced the rain before a cloud was visible. “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

Rev. Switzer encouraged those who have been praying for a long time—for a prodigal, for healing, for a dry season to end—to keep looking. God often begins His greatest downpours with the smallest of clouds. Humble, persistent, expectant prayer tills the soil and prepares the harvest.
