1 Kings 18
Lessons from Mount Carmel

Join us for the third night of Campmeeting 2026 at New Prospect Methodist Campground in Vancleave, Mississippi. In this powerful message from 1 Kings 18, Rev. Jeff Switzer walks through the dramatic showdown on Mount Carmel between the prophet Elijah and the prophets of Baal.

After years of spiritual drought and compromise under King Ahab and Queen Jezebel, Elijah calls the nation of Israel to a moment of decision: “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.” God answers with fire from heaven, consuming the sacrifice, the wood, the stones, the dust, and even the water in the trench—proving beyond doubt that He alone is the living God.

From this unforgettable account, Rev. Switzer draws eight timely lessons for our lives, homes, and churches today:

  1. There is only one God — No blending, no syncretism, no “Jesus plus something else.” The fullness of deity dwells in Christ alone.
  2. Our devotion must be undivided — God answers the prayer of an undivided heart. He wants our full allegiance, not just our admiration.
  3. Our purpose is to glorify God — The miracle was never mainly about the people; it was about revealing the glory of the Lord so others would know Him.
  4. There is great influence in one anointed, devoted life — Like Elijah (and like the encouraging word given to a young Dolly Parton), one person fully yielded to God can make a lasting difference.
  5. We are never truly alone — Even when the odds feel overwhelming (850 to 1), God is with us. Anyone plus God equals victory.
  6. Repentance, faith, and purity are the seeds of renewal — When the fire fell, the people fell on their faces and declared, “The Lord—he is God!”
  7. God is in control — The same God who sent the fire also sent the rain. He is sovereign over nature, circumstances, and every detail of our lives.
  8. There is power in prayer — Elijah’s short, God-centered prayer for fire and his persistent, humble prayer for rain both remind us that the earnest prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective (James 5).

Whether you need encouragement to stand firm, a fresh call to wholehearted devotion, or a reminder that God still answers prayer, this message from Mount Carmel will strengthen your faith.
