In this powerful message, Rev. Ron McDougald unpacks Jesus’ short but challenging parables of the hidden treasure in the field and the pearl of great price. Drawing from everyday stories—World War II enlistments “for the duration plus six months,” a Japanese pearl diver’s dangerous pursuit of the perfect pearl, John Sutter and the California Gold Rush, mattresses stuffed with cash, and even a modern phone scam—he asks the hard questions these kingdom parables raise:
- What is so valuable that a person would joyfully sell _everything_ to possess it?
- What in our lives competes with, distracts from, or chokes out the surpassing worth of knowing Christ?
- Are we willing to count as loss the things we most treasure—possessions, reputation, hobbies, even good things like family time—so that we may gain Christ?
Using Philippians 3:7-8 and 1 John 2:15, Pastor Ron shows how the apostle Paul and the early church understood the cost and the prize of the Kingdom. He reminds us that the values of God’s Kingdom are radically different from the values of any earthly kingdom, including our own. The sermon ends with a clear invitation: seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and watch everything else take its proper (much smaller) place.
This is “Kingdom stuff”—costly, joyful, all-or-nothing, and the only thing that ultimately matters.
