Welcome to Week 9 of our Bible study series, "Profoundly Christian, Distinctly Methodist," featuring Brother Ron McDougald at Mount Pleasant! Continue our 10-month exploration of Profoundly Christian, Distinctly Methodist and A Catechism of Christian Faith and Doctrine for the Global Methodist Church, rooted in the Nicene Creed. This session delves into the Holy Spirit's role in salvation, covering Questions 22 and 23, with lively group discussions on conviction, repentance, regeneration, and holy living.

In this video, we examine:

  • Question 22: How does the Holy Spirit lead us to repentance from sin? By convincing the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment. Scriptures: Micah 3:8, John 16:7-11, John 3:5-8, Acts 2:37-38, Romans 8:15-16, Galatians 3:2-3, Titus 3:5.
  • Question 23: How does the Holy Spirit regenerate us? Through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, leading to new birth and sanctification.
  • Group reflections: Personal stories of conviction (e.g., daily awareness of sin, making amends like in AA), debates on law vs. grace, sin in everyday activities (e.g., watching football for hours), and John Wesley's views on holiness.
  • Video discussion: Insights from a watched clip on stewardship of time, talents, and treasures, sparking talks on distractions, legalism, and responding to the Spirit's guidance.

Key Themes:

  • The Spirit's work in convicting sinners, fostering repentance, regeneration, and ongoing sanctification—balancing grace and holy living without legalism.
  • Freedom from sin through faith, not works, while using the law for conviction and holiness; avoiding "puffed up" attitudes in spiritual experiences.
  • Practical applications: Confession, forgiveness, stewardship, and humility in group settings.
