Welcome to Week 7 of our Bible study series, "Profoundly Christian, Distinctly Methodist," at Mount Pleasant! Join us in our 10-month journey through "A Catechism of Christian Faith and Doctrine for the Global Methodist Church," guided by the Nicene Creed. This session focuses on Questions 13 and 14, exploring the profound connection between Christ's cross and resurrection—central to our faith and salvation.

In this video, we discuss:

  • Question 13: How does God reconcile us in Christ? Through the death of Christ. Scriptures: Matthew 27:26, 50, 59-60; Mark 15:37; Luke 23:46; John 19:30; Romans 5:10; 2 Corinthians 5:18-19; Ephesians 2:16; Colossians 1:19-22; 1 Peter 2:24; 1 John 2:2.
  • Question 14: Did Jesus Christ rise bodily from the dead? Yes, on the third day, in accordance with the Scriptures. Key verses: Matthew 28:1-10; Mark 16:1-8; Luke 24:1-12; John 20:1-18; Acts 1:3; 1 Corinthians 15:3-8; 1 Peter 1:3.
  • Reflections on atonement: Breaking down "at-one-ment" as reconciliation from estrangement due to sin (original and personal), emphasizing substitutionary atonement while noting Christ's entire life as salvific.
  • The cross as a Roman symbol of shame and execution, transformed into hope through resurrection—without which, as Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15, our faith is in vain.
  • Group insights: Wearing crosses, theories like the exemplar model, and the resurrection as the lynchpin of salvation, including discussions on bodily resurrection and its timing.

Key Themes:

  • Christ's suffering, death, and bodily resurrection as the means of salvation, intercession, and eternal hope—not just events, but transformative for believers.
  • Addressing modern preaching: Prioritizing core doctrines like incarnation, crucifixion, and resurrection over secondary topics.
  • Practical faith: Responding to the Gospel through belief, good works, and living hope, as exemplified in hymns and camp meetings.
